Summary

June Mabee is a lot of things。
She’s the girl next door。
She’s the best friend I ever had。
She was my first kiss, as awkward as it was。
And she’s the last person I should have feelings for。 Ever。

Two years ago, I cut all ties with her because I had no choice。 No more late night phone calls, no hellos or goodbyes, not even a passing smile。 I left her to wonder what happened to the us we used to be。 We were best friends, and then suddenly…we weren’t。 And I know it hurt。 But the truth would have hurt her more, and being anything with June would have destroyed my family。

For a while, we managed to exist a hundred feet apart with no connection at all。 She changed schools。 I kept busy。 We existed, apart。 But no matter how hard I tried to not think about her, I just couldn’t stay away from the funny, adventurous, steadfast girl with wild green eyes。

She’s back。 We’re seniors now。 We’ve grown—all of us。 And while I might be different, she’s different too。 She takes risks, stands up for herself and doesn’t back down。 The more we’re forced together, the more I miss her。 But for June to be a part of my story, I need to tell her the whole truth, everything that happened。 And I’m not sure any of us are ready for that。

Books, Coffee & PassionVarsity Captain is Lucas' POV of the events in Varsity Heartbreaker, the first book in the Varsity series。 I was intrigued by Lucas' perspective during the time I read the first book。 I understood why it was important to get only June's POV during that book。 But I wanted to know what was going on in Lucas' head and heart。 That's the reason I was very excited when Varsity Captain was announced。It was fantastic to be back in the Varsity series world。 I absolutely love these Books, Coffee & PassionVarsity Captain is Lucas' POV of the events in Varsity Heartbreaker, the first book in the Varsity series。 I was intrigued by Lucas' perspective during the time I read the first book。 I understood why it was important to get only June's POV during that book。 But I wanted to know what was going on in Lucas' head and heart。 That's the reason I was very excited when Varsity Captain was announced。It was fantastic to be back in the Varsity series world。 I absolutely love these characters。 I enjoyed how Ginger Scott managed to write this story。 Lucas' voice sounded very true to his character and I liked that it made me understand his actions and options better。 It wasn't easy at the beginning of the book, but ultimately my heart broke for Lucas and what he was going through。 His relationship with his parents was explored in this book。 It definitely helped me understand why Lucas made the choice of cutting ties with June。 I loved how he slowly started to confront his own choices and how he started to get closer to June while doing that。 Lucas' character growth was beautifully written。 I have to say there was one aspect that I still wanted more of in this book: Lucas and Tory's friendship。 Tory is still my favorite character in the Varsity series and I wanted more Tory in Varsity Captain。Overall, I enjoyed Varsity Captain a lot。 It was a perfect complement to the Varsity series。 。。。more

Such an unexpected surprise for those of us who loved and devoured the original trio of Varsity books, Varsity Captain was the extra cherry on top of what I consider one of Ginger Scott's best love stories ever。 A part of me had almost forgotten the pain June Mabee and Lucas Fuller endured as their best friend status went from 100 to zero almost overnight。 How they suffered from the sins and lies of their parents and fell out of rhythm with each other。 As we now get Lucas's side of what transpir Such an unexpected surprise for those of us who loved and devoured the original trio of Varsity books, Varsity Captain was the extra cherry on top of what I consider one of Ginger Scott's best love stories ever。 A part of me had almost forgotten the pain June Mabee and Lucas Fuller endured as their best friend status went from 100 to zero almost overnight。 How they suffered from the sins and lies of their parents and fell out of rhythm with each other。 As we now get Lucas's side of what transpired I was right back in all the painful glory as he pulls together his own fragmented life while finding his way back to his soulmate。 And dare I say: I loved every single minute。My goodness, the angst is on overload as answers to the many questions I had after reading Varsity Heartbreaker last year, are finally answered。 Seeing how Lucas reacts to June being back in his school。 Seeing the torment she has to endure at the hands of the evil Ava。 And knowing deep down that his affection for his next-door neighbor never waivered。 This is YA at its very best and Scott has proven herself once again she is a master at crafting these beautiful stories。June is as stoic and caring as ever。 She takes everything in stride until the dam finally breaks and I was overjoyed at getting to witness Lucas being her rock once more。 Seeing through his eyes what a fool he has been and knowing that he was finally on the path to making things right for his future and for both June's past and present。I don't blame this author for wanting to be back in Lucas Fuller's world。 Although there is plenty of heartache as he takes charge of his life with disappointment at every turn when it comes to his father, in particular, there are also the lighter moments with his best friend Tory and both touching and passionate times with June that made all the agony at being apart from his girl easier to forget。I highly recommend this entire series that features wonderful characters and all that comes with being young and in love。 Ginger Scott certainly has her pulse on the YA genre and is a go-to for me when it comes to this particular brand of romance。5 solid stars! 。。。more

Lucas Fuller, I’m in love with you! This author writes some of the most satisfying mature YA, in my opinion。 It has all the angst of teens, not over the top or manufactured。 Real life stuff。 And it’s written so smart, emotional and the flow of the story is perfection。She writes the butterflies of all those new and “first” experiences so beautifully and never fails to have me right there in the moment with the characters。 Nervous, giddy and emotional。 I feel vulnerable like a teenager。 It’s reall Lucas Fuller, I’m in love with you! I understood him and my heart broke a little for him。He’s a pretty amazing character, I loved his perspective, his moments and his time with June and his group of friends。 His family dynamic is a huge part of the story。 It’s serious, it’s emotional and it gets unveiled throughout。 It is a lot of drama in a sense, but it’s not written in a way that overwhelms or takes over the story。I really love the emotional moments and the humorous ones。 Great balance!Oh, and the chemistry and heat is not lacking at all! These two are amazing together!I had all the butterflies, excited zings and heat I wanted! 。。。more

I really enjoyed being in Lucas Fuller's head for the alternate pov in Varsity Captain。 I adored June Mabee in Varsity Heartbreaker。 Reading it felt like a re-read of an old favorite with a different perspective with new things we never knew because June wasn't present。 What a treat! This is Varsity Heartbreaker told from Lucas' POV。 Getting to see the events of VH from his head really gave a deeper picture of the story。 Did I like the way he went about things? I’m not really a fan of reading the same book, but from a different POV。 While I think there is benefit in it, a whole book seems a bit like overkill。Luckily for me it’s been a while since I read the first book, so it’s not a direct comparison for me。There’s a lot to like about Lucas (most of which we saw in book 1)。 There’s also a lot not to like。 I’ve got to confess, I’m not overly taken with him and his actions in this book, but I understand them。This book has Ginger’s signature down to earth I’m not really a fan of reading the same book, but from a different POV。 While I think there is benefit in it, a whole book seems a bit like overkill。Luckily for me it’s been a while since I read the first book, so it’s not a direct comparison for me。There’s a lot to like about Lucas (most of which we saw in book 1)。 There’s also a lot not to like。 I’ve got to confess, I’m not overly taken with him and his actions in this book, but I understand them。This book has Ginger’s signature down to earth characters, with solid Nolan and Reed vibes (although that might be because I just recently listened to the Going Long audio)。 Still, this is a solid book and an enjoyable one。 。。。more

I'm always excited when an author retells a story from another perspective, and that is what Ginger Scott has done in Varsity Captain。 I'd read Lucas and June's story before in Varsity Heartbreaker, Book #1 in the Varsity series, but that book was told from June's POV。 With Varsity Captain, we get inside Lucas's head, and it gives their story an entirely new feel。I'll admit that when I first started reading this book, many of the details of Lucas and June's story were a little fuzzy, but it only I'm always excited when an author retells a story from another perspective, and that is what Ginger Scott has done in Varsity Captain。 I'd read Lucas and June's story before in Varsity Heartbreaker, Book #1 in the Varsity series, but that book was told from June's POV。 With Varsity Captain, we get inside Lucas's head, and it gives their story an entirely new feel。I'll admit that when I first started reading this book, many of the details of Lucas and June's story were a little fuzzy, but it only took a few chapters for so much to come rushing back in。 I've always adored this couple。 Friends for years, they could have become more, until Lucas put a sudden stop to all communication with June。 He had his reasons, but June wasn't aware of them。 For two years, he gave her the silent treatment, but then she came back to his school and he was forced to be in her presence。 Lucas wants to tell her the truth, he wants to admit to his feelings for her, he wants a life that is entirely different than the one that he is supposed to be working toward。 Lucas wants a lot of things, but in order to get them, he'll need to put himself before his family for a change。Although I knew the basics of this storyline, I was surprised by how quickly this story drew me in and didn't let go。 I couldn't get enough。 Seeing the story from Lucas's perspective, there were so many new details and events that really made me better understand his character and the reasoning for his actions。 Where my heart broke for June in Varsity Heartbreaker, my heart broke for Lucas in this story。 Although I hated so many of his decisions, it was his loyalty and need to please others that were at fault, and I couldn't really blame him for that。You can totally read this as a stand-alone novel, but if you enjoy a solid YA sports romance, then I recommend that you read the entire Varsity series。 Ginger Scott has proved herself to be one of my favorite YA/NA authors。 Every single one of her books give me all the feels, and this one is no exception。 。。。more
